How to Securely Navigate a Parking Garage

Parking Garage

If you’re walking through a parking garage or lot, the right design goes a long way in keeping you safe. That said, there are some practices that can help you feel even safer.

Just about anyone who has ever walked through a parking garage is familiar with the sometimes-eerie sense that can wash over you while you are. Ideally, a parking garage or lot is designed in such a way that promotes security and leaves you feeling safe. As good as parking lot garage design may be sometimes though, you’re always going to want to take on some level of personal responsibility to keep yourself safe. Take some time to brush up on these general safety tips when navigating a parking garage or lot and remember that this is a good time to consider parking structure design as well.

Stick to Populated Areas

If you want to deter crooks, you’re going to want to stick around dense areas. Think about it this way: if you’re walking around a garage and notice someone breaking into a car, you’re likely to call the police or inform security professionals. The same is true of the vast majority of people, which is why you always want to try to park near other cars and other people. By having more people around your car, you’re increasing the sense of public accountability and overall making your situation much safer.

Park Near Lights and Security Technologies

Does the parking lot have adequate lighting in some areas but not others? How about security cameras or other security technologies? Parking near these elements of parking structure design can help increase your sense of security. When systems like that are in place, it makes a would-be wrongdoer think twice about messing with you or your property.

Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket

Most of us look at our phones without thinking twice. In fact, it’s pretty common to take a gander at your pocket-sized screen while on your way to your vehicle in the lot. This opens you up to all kinds of attacks though and prevents you from being visually distracted. It might be tempting to phone a friend while walking home, too, but you’re better off leaving the phone in your pocket and not making yourself a target.

Why Design Matters

While there is some level of personal responsibility involved here, much of this is up to the designers of parking structures. This includes adequate lighting, security technologies, clear signage, and more. Properly designed spaces are crucial in making sure everyone is safe.
