The Dire Need for Terrorist Screening Technology

Terrorist Screening Technology

In a world stricken by horrible terrorism tragedies, it’s important to develop terrorist screening technology that can help keep us safe.

On Monday, May 23rd, an improvised explosive was set off in Manchester at an Ariana Grande concert. As of now, there are 22 confirmed casualties and even more injuries. When talking about security threats and potential terrorist attacks, it’s important to do so carefully and thoughtfully. Gatekeeper would like to extend their thoughts to the victims of the attacks as well as their family and friends. What has become clear from this is the unfortunate necessity of security protocols and terrorist screening technology in the modern age.

Looking at The Stats

According to a Wikipedia crowdsourced map of terror attacks created in collaboration between Esri Story Maps and PeaceTech Labs, 2017 has seen a total of 497 attacks that could be considered terrorist attacks, resulting in over three thousand fatalities. While this info is crowdsourced and may be inconsistent, it’s still clear just looking at those numbers that the potential for loss of human life is staggering. In post-September 11, 2001 attack life, international security isn’t something humanity can gamble on any longer. Terrorist screening technology isn’t just an added safeguard, it’s an absolute necessity for the world climate we live in.

The Terrorist Screening Center

Part of why us terrorist screening technology developers have been able to identify potential terrorist threats has been due to the Terrorist Screening Center. As a division of the FBI created after 9/11, the TSC has been critical in maintaining the Terrorist Screening Database, which contains information about all known or suspected terrorists. Being able to integrate the right scanners with this database means being able to successfully track terror activity.

What’s The Role of Technology?

In the wake of unfortunate events like this, it’s important to first heal, discuss, and process. It’s also important to use this as a time to remember how essential our security is. Whether it’s our personal security or national security, we want to feel safe and protected. Advancements in technology have already done so much in being able to combat terror threats, but continued research and development will create more technologies capable of keeping us safe and secure.
